– Sold OutThe Sundollar Nectarine Tree is an early-ripening nectarine developed by the University of Florida for areas with mild to moderately cold winters. It produces attractive, smooth-skinned fruit with yellow flesh and a bright red blush covering most of the yellow skin.
Sundollar’s firm, juicy nectarines are delicious when eaten fresh and are also suitable for slicing, preserves, cobblers, pies and other homemade desserts.
Plant Details
UF/IFAS lists Sundollar as a 350-chill-hour nectarine with showy flowers, semi-clingstone fruit and approximately 70 days from full bloom to ripening.
Fruit and Flavor
Sundollar produces smooth-skinned yellow nectarines covered with a bright red blush. The fruit is generally medium-sized, round and attractively shaped.
The yellow flesh is firm and juicy with good traditional nectarine flavor. UF/IFAS trial information rated Sundollar highly for both firmness and fruit shape.
Sundollar is a semi-clingstone nectarine, meaning the flesh may remain partially attached to the pit. It usually separates more easily as the fruit reaches full ripeness.
Pollination
Sundollar is self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit without another nectarine variety nearby.
A second nectarine or peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. Bees and other pollinating insects can still help improve flower pollination and overall fruit set. UF/IFAS identifies peaches and nectarines as self-fertile fruit trees.
North Florida Growing Note
Sundollar’s requirement of approximately 350 chill hours is a good match for many parts of North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. UF/IFAS places Sundollar in the 300–400 chill-unit range and recommends choosing cultivars whose requirements are reliably satisfied at the planting location.
The tree should normally receive sufficient winter chilling around DeFuniak Springs. However, late freezes can damage open flowers and newly developing fruit.
Plant Sundollar in a sunny, elevated location rather than a low area where cold air settles. Proper site selection, good air drainage and protection from standing water will improve its chance of producing dependable crops.
Planting and Care
Plant Sundollar in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.
Choose a location with excellent drainage. Nectarine trees do not tolerate standing water or continuously wet roots. Sandy North Florida soil is suitable when the tree receives consistent water and appropriate nutrition.
Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the canopy and makes spraying and harvesting easier.
Thin young nectarines when they are approximately nickel-sized, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning improves fruit size and quality while reducing the chance of branches breaking under a heavy crop.
Prune annually because nectarines produce fruit primarily on wood that grew during the previous season. UF/IFAS recommends open-center training and careful thinning for Florida peach and nectarine trees.
